Video Game Art

Although it is not considered a classical art form, video game art is quickly becoming a popular field for the practical application of digital art. On the other hand, the technical expertise and time needed to create an excellent looking game takes many years of practice to learn. With the programming languages always being changed, a digital artist employed in the video games field is always learning new ways to manipulate color and graphic rendering. The result of this effort has been the gradual progress to the amazing graphics that are seen on many of today’s popular titles.

The vast scope of some of the video game art can be truly astounding. Instead of working on a fixed canvas, a team of digital artists may be concerned with the construction and decoration of a whole world, complete with creatures and characters. The movement of these characters must also be taken into account as well as how light is absorbed or refracted depending on a player’s position. In the majority of cases, advanced software programs are used by the game designer to create the lighting structures and the transition between different graphic elements. Three dimensional modeling can also be done with these programs and is what gives the digital art a realistic appearance.

There is a subgenre of video game art as well. Some makers of digital art can use software to change the skin of a certain game. This means that the original gameplay will remain the same, but the characters and environment can be changed in their appearance. This is a popular digital art project with games that have many levels as a single level can be modified to match the digital artist’s idea. Video game art may not have the acclaim of other digital art forms yet, but people who play the games appreciate the elevation of the graphic levels.
